Position Title: Conservation Crew Member
Location: Calgary
Hours: 40h/week, overtime banked at 1:1, per-diem for travel requiring overnight stays
Salary: $19.00 - $22.5/hr
Freshwater Conservation Canada is a science-based, national, charitable conservation organization. We were founded in 1972 in response to challenges to freshwater fisheries through a focus on volunteer-driven, science-based resource conservation and hands-on activities. Our mission is “to conserve, protect and restore Canada's freshwater ecosystems and their coldwater resources for current and future generations”.
Job Description: The Conservation Crew Member will be part of a small team carrying out monitoring and assessment, habitat rehabilitation, and public education and outreach activities. This position will collaborate with other Freshwater Conservation Canada staff, partner organizations, Freshwater Conservation Canada chapters, and volunteers to accomplish a variety of projects in Alberta’s eastern slopes region, ensuring work is completed in a safe and timely manner.
Work will frequently take place on weekends and includes office and field work. This job is physically demanding and requires lifting, digging, dragging, and carrying weighted items, as well as operating heavy hydraulic equipment and power tools, often in a remote setting under inclement weather conditions. This position is based in Calgary, with work in watersheds throughout the eastern slopes region of Alberta, requiring significant driving. Some overnight travel will be expected and may include camping.
Crew member positions are currently being filled for two periods:
- May to November
- July to November
Responsibilities:
Assist in the execution of daily work plans, including in-stream restoration, fish and fish and fish habitat sampling, bioengineering, invasive species removal, site preparation, tree/shrub planting, and post-restoration maintenance and monitoring.
Work collaboratively with fellow crew members to ensure project objectives are met safely and efficiently.
Safely operate equipment and tools in the field.
Participate in community outreach events and assist in creating outreach materials including blog/social media content.
Collect data and assist in report preparation.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Clean 3-year driving abstract, and 3-year claim-free insurance history
Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License
Basic field skills (map-reading/navigation, preparedness, problem solving)
Legally entitled to work in Canada
Comfortable working in the outdoors, around water and in adverse weather conditions
Experience with Microsoft Office programs and social media
Must have some evening and weekend availability
Standard First Aid and CPR certification
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
Student or recent graduate of ecology, biology, or related post-secondary studies
Familiarity with riparian plant communities, stream and riparian rehabilitation techniques (example: bioengineering, low-tech process-based restoration) and assessment field work (aquatic habitat assessments, electrofishing surveys)
Familiarity with power tools and small engines
Electrofishing certification
Fish identification skills
Experience working with volunteers and members of the public
