About the event
WHY?
Freshwater Conservation Canada is continuing work to restore degraded stream habitat in the Porcupine Hills area. At the Sharples Creek North Tributary in the Porcupine Hills, we plan to implement an emerging restoration technique: low-tech process-based restoration (LTPBR). This technique utilizes natural building materials to construct two types of temporary, instream structures: beaver dam analogues (BDAs) and post-assisted log structures (PALS). These structures create changes in the stream by adding complexity to it. BDAs mimic natural beaver dams by pooling water, resulting in increased water storage, greater floodplain connectivity, and improved instream and riparian habitat conditions. Eventually, we hope our efforts in several area streams will recover native fish communities in the watershed and bolster the ability of these watercourses to withstand extreme flow events, such as floods and drought.
