Recovering Aquatic Biodiversity

Recovering aquatic biodiversity is about giving freshwater species a second chance.  From protecting vulnerable aquatic animals to creating habitats that support their survival, we work to bring life back to rivers, streams, and lakes across Canada.

This means repatriating native species to their rightful waters or translocating them to safer habitats, increasing water availability, and ensure they have the space they need to thrive.  With every action, we're helping species return, recover, and rebuild these ecosystems they call home.

Reconnecting Canada

Reconnecting Canada is a multi-year conservation focus that encompasses multiple programs and initiatives. Freshwater Conservation Canada runs to reconnect rivers and streams that are severely contaminated by culverts.  Culverts can have significant impact on streams in different ways, including the degradation of water quality, creating barriers to the migration of fish and other animals, and altering stream flows. Communities and volunteers can play a key role in this effort by taking part in culvert assessments, data gathering and partnering on the implementation of stream crossing remediation programs and projects.

Cooling Streams

Cooling Streams  is focused on restoring riparian areas – the buffer of vegetation that connects land and water along streams, rivers, and lakes. By planting trees and shrubs along lakes, rivers, and streams we can help take carbon from the atmosphere. The trees and plants found within riparian zones are adapted to natural disturbances, such as spring floods and summer low-flow periods, which helps make these ecosystems more resilient to the expected disruptions from climate change. The built-in resilience of riparian ecosystems is ideal for protection and provides refuge for vulnerable wildlife and plant species, while also helping communities adapt to climate change.

Conservation Support

Freshwater is the lifeblood of our planet, and at Freshwater Conservation Canada, we're dedicated to conserving, protecting, and restoring Canada's rivers, streams, and lakes.  Through hands on projects, innovative programs, and meaning partnerships, we're creating healthier habitats for aquatic species and ensuring clean water for generations to come.

Volunteers, community groups, and corporate teams contribute to this work through hands-on activities like habitat restoration, water monitoring, and biodiversity protection during organized workdays.  These efforts help strengthen freshwater ecosystems and ensure their long-term health.
