Reconnecting Canada

Culverts can have significant impacts on streams in different ways, including the degradation of water quality, creating barriers to the migration of fish and other animals, and altering stream flows.

Reconnecting Canada is a multiyear conservation program managed by Freshwater Conservation Canada. Its goal is to restore rivers and streams severely impacted by culverts. Launched in 2015, the program aims to reconnect one million miles of waterways nationwide. Culverts can significantly negatively affect streams by degrading water quality, obstructing the movement of fish and other wildlife, and changing stream flows.

Awareness of this issue among the public is currently low, so increasing awareness and encouraging action will be crucial for successfully implementing the Reconnecting Canada program. To effectively carry out the Reconnecting Canada Education and Outreach program, partnerships must be formed with communities, conservation groups, industry, and various levels of government. Communities and volunteers will have a vital role to play in the program by participating in culvert assessments, collecting data, and collaborating on stream-crossing remediation projects.
