About the event
Piper Creek flows through agricultural farmland and the southern portion of the City of Red Deer between 40th Ave and 50th Ave before meeting Waskasoo Creek in downtown Red Deer. Piper Creek has been affected by various land uses, such as urbanization and agriculture, which have left some of its riparian areas in poor health.
In 2016 - 2017, Freshwater Conservation Canada (formerly Trout Unlimited Canada) partnered with ReThink Red Deer, Cows and Fish, the City of Red Deer, and members of the Piper Creek Restoration Agriculture Project to improve conditions along Piper Creek within the PCRA Project site. Work involved removing a problematic stream crossing and repairing damaged streambanks and riparian plantings of native trees and shrubs along the stream. ReThink Red Deer has continued to steward the site, which has also seen an influx of beavers that have dramatically changed the stream into a diverse, complex riverscape.
