About the event
WHY?
Freshwater Conservation Canada is continuing work to restore degraded stream habitat in the Porcupine Hills area. At Sharples Creek in the Porcupine Hills, we plan to install beaver dam analogues (BDAs) to restore the natural climate resiliency of the creek. BDAs mimic natural beaver dams by pooling water, resulting in increased water storage, greater floodplain connectivity, and improved instream and riparian habitat conditions. Eventually, we hope our efforts in several area streams will recover native fish communities in the watershed and bolster the ability of these watercourses to withstand extreme flow events, such as floods and drought.
BEAVER DAM ANALOGUE BUILD
Freshwater Conservation Canada staff and volunteers will work together to build BDAs structures in Sharples Creek. This will involve carrying woody debris, using hand tools to build structures, and utilizing a gas-powered hydraulic post pounder.
