Markdale Dam Before
Markdale Dam Removal-A dam on Armstrong Creek in Markdale, Ontario has been removed and replaced by a free-flowing stream. Originally, the dam had created a community swimming pond in Markdale’s Rotary Park, but is now open and allowing fish passage as nature intended.
Armstrong Creek is a tributary of the Rocky Saugeen. It is a cold water system that supports a large population of Brook Trout, amongst many other species.
This project was part of Trout Unlimited Canada’s national campaign, Reconnecting Canada. The goal was to remove the dam to re-establish fish migration as well as water flow and sediment transport by removing the dam structure and constructing a new channel and banks downstream. This component of the project was completed in at the end of September.
Moving forward, vegetation will be planted along the banks to provide instream cover and habitat, while also leaving the stream accessible to the public. Future plans also involve the construction of a trail along the river with educational signs outlining the project and the stream’s ecological importance.
Markdale Dam Removed
The dam removal project was a collaborative initiative involving the Markdale Rotary Club, the Happy Trout Chapter, Saugeen River Conservation Authority, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry and the Municipality of Grey Highlands.
