PEI Fish Kill

For the second straight year Prince Edward Island’s Trout River has suffered yet another fish kill.  This year’s fish kill can only be described as catastrophic.

So far over 1900 fish have been collected.  Most of the dead fish are brook trout but 21 Atlantic salmon and a few hundred stickleback are among the dead.  The largest brook trout recovered measured 50cm.

No cause has been identified as investigation into the fish kill continues.  Last year’s fish kill resulted in charges laid against two farmers for violating buffer zone regulations. Buffer zone regulations determine how much space a farmer must have between a field and a waterway. One farmer pleaded guilty in that case, charges were dismissed against the other farmer.
