Stream Rehabilitation Training Program

Stream Rehabilitation Training

“Trout Unlimited Canada was honored by the generous support of the City of Calgary, TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, Alberta Conservation Association, and Alberta EcoTrust Foundation to bring our Stream Rehabilitation Training program to Calgary, Alberta for the first time.

As on the ground restoration work becomes more constrained by governments, the intent of the program is to train professionals and volunteers alike in the science and application of watershed and stream rehabilitation. Given our greater climate variability, it means that we can all make a difference in helping to improve our natural infrastructure and make it more resilient to higher climate variability as competent stream managers and rehabilitation experts.

From November 18-21, 52 participants from a variety of backgrounds including all levels of government, industry, academia and TUC volunteers took part in this first set of six workshops. Workshops 1-3 focused on planning and assessment: creating the context for watershed and stream systems, understanding and assessing the system, and diagnosing the problem and developing a plan. Our next set of workshops will be on where the rubber hits the road and we deal with solutions: linking solutions to problems, project planning, development and managing the cookbook and applying a strategic approach to large scale rehabilitation.

Bringing this unique training program to western Canada will help to build a community of practice, facilitating communication and collaboration among practitioners who can also mentor others in their communities to ultimately encourage the best practices of stream rehabilitation, promoting healthy, productive and resilient watersheds.

Some of the feedback we heard from participants included for our recent course in Calgary:

“I found the training to be excellent. The material and foundation to understand stream rehabilitation, in particular how the approaches require an understanding of the watershed and biophysical elements.”

“Beautiful venue! The information provided was incredibly relevant to my profession. Great instructors love how enthusiastic they were. I loved listening to them speak-great insight… Overall amazing course. I am so motivated to utilize what I learned.”
