TUC Completes Courtcliffe Park Restoration Project

Trout Unlimited Canada is proud to announce the completion of a major restoration project within Hamilton’s Courtcliffe Park. This restoration project improves water quality, water flow, aquatic habitat and creekside vegetation benefitting fish, aquatic wildlife and the animals that live in and around Bronte Creek for years to come.

Located within the headwaters of Bronte Creek, TUC’s Courtcliffe project also benefits the creek downstream throughout its length. The repair of a creek crossing in Courtcliffe Park by removing two pipes (culverts) and replacing them with a bridge to allow Bronte Creek to once again flow under the walking path was a major project component. The small concrete pipes restricted Bronte Creek’s natural flow and created an on-line pond.  With the bridge in place and the pond removed the creek will return to its natural width.  A straightened manmade side channel was also removed allowing Bronte Creek to return to its original path, flowing as it once did.

Trout Unlimited Canada CEO, Silvia D’Amelio states, “This amazing project will benefit the lives of everyone who uses the park and all those downstream.  It is a great example of community and industry partnership towards an improved natural area.”

David Sweet, Member of Parliament for Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Westdale also said, “Courtcliffe Park is a very popular recreational facility for Carlisle and northeast Flamborough residents. The completion of this restoration project only enhances its environmental importance and appeal.”

This project received large funding contributions from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, RBC and Union Gas. Other project funders included the Government of Ontario, the Hamilton-Halton Watershed Stewardship Program, the City of Hamilton, the Toronto Community Foundation, TD, Canada Summer Jobs and the local Carlisle community.

Additional support has been provided by the Courtcliffe Park Committee, the Ted Knott Chapter of TUC, the Hamilton-Halton Watershed Stewardship Program and Conservation Halton.
