TUC’s YFR Program is Supported by The Winnipeg Foundation-The Winnipeg Foundation has supported Trout Unlimited Canada’s Yellow Fish Road program in the City of Winnipeg for over two years, with the help of promotional support from FortWhyte Alive and The City of Winnipeg.
The Winnipeg Foundation is a charitable organization who’s vision is, “A Winnipeg where community life flourishes for all.” Funding from The Winnipeg Foundation ensures that communities in Winnipeg have a voice in the protection of our freshwater resources today and into the future.
From 2015 to 2016 the Yellow Fish Road program reached over 8,500 people in events and 3,000 people at schools and summer camps and provided five training opportunities for educators and businesses. As an underserved regional area of the YFR program, many schools, communities and families in Winnipeg were not receiving the critical message that ‘Only Rain goes down the Drain’. This important and timely message serves as a simple reminder to some, but is new information to many others, even though the city has a combined storm drain and sewer system. Education in water pollution prevention serves as a first line of defense in the protection of our freshwater resources.
Trout Unlimited Canada’s Yellow Fish Road program provides water education that creates a knowledgeable, motivated youth who engage in positive environmental actions. After our first year as a pilot program in 2015, we have seen many opportunities to strengthen and grow this valuable education program with The Winnipeg Foundation.
