Volunteers Needed for Prairie Creek Fish Passage Study

Writer: Freshwater Conservation CanadaFreshwater Conservation Canada

Volunteers Needed for Prairie Creek Fish Passage Study:  The Prairie Creek Fish Passage Improvement Project was completed in October 2015.

The work focused remediating a culvert crossing on Prairie Creek, southwest of Rocky Mountain House along the Ram River Gas Plant Road. The culvert had been identified as a barrier to fish passage, for some sizes and species of fish. TUC worked with Husky Oil Operations Ltd (Husky) to identify innovative solutions to help solve this issue long-term.

This project involved work on the culvert itself, as well as the installation of stone into the creek, and repairs at the culvert inlet and outlet to address erosion issues and improve fish passage. The project received funding from the Recreational Fisheries Conservation Partnership Program administered by DFO. Local suppliers Nilex, and Fish Creek Excavating, also made donations of materials to the project.

Now that the construction and restoration aspects of this project are complete, we want to assess the ability for fish living in Prairie Creek to pass through the newly improved culvert. TUC received financial support from the Alberta Conservation Association and is again working with Husky and CH2M Hill to capture, tag, and monitor the movement of fish in Prairie Creek, focusing upstream and downstream of the culvert.

We are looking for volunteers to help with this effort! A safety talk, introduction, and capture techniques will be discussed at the start of each workday. Volunteers will then be split into groups, either fishing (angling), electrofishing, or assisting with the tagging and release of fish. There will be opportunities to try different tasks including harvesting and planting willow stakes along the shoreline to help improve riparian health.

ALL VOLUNTEERS MUST BRING LEAK FREE WADERS.

Volunteers can register for one or multiple days.

Where to Meet? Volunteers can meet at the Tim Hortons on 45th Street in Rocky Mountain House at 9:00 am on September 19th, 20th, and 21st 2016.
